Brief synopsis: VoiceThread is a powerful Web 2.0 application that allows digital classroom teachers to create interactive visual presentations with voice or written annotation.
Benefits: VoiceThread is easy to use. Uploading pictures can be done in a variety of ways. Annotation can be typed or voice can be added by clicking a microphone icon and speaking. WebCam annotation is also available. VoiceThread offers an education package that allows students in to create their own VoiceThread presentations or to add comments of their own to teacher-created presentations. Safety features are included, so comments can be monitored by the teacher, before they go live.
Drawbacks: Students who want to leave audio or video comments may be restricted by the hardware the school offers. Some school district firewalls block VoiceThread.
Conclusion: The VoiceThread presentation above, produced by teacher Michelle Pacansky-Brock, is an example of excellent use of VoiceThread in the classroom.
